MILITARY LIBRARY 2.0 -- MLW 2008 UPDATE

The 52nd Annual MLW Conference is open for registration!

Your colleagues in Monterey, CA, look forward to welcoming you to our scenic community for MLW 2008, December 8-12. Please register for the conference, reserve your hotel room (the MLW discounted room rate is offered until November 6th), and make your travel plans soon to participate in this great training opportunity.

Military Library 2.0: the Dawn of a New Revolution, will focus on how library staff, patrons, and facilities are interacting with each other in an ever more digital, global, web-social, and user-centric world. The conference is organized around 3 major themes:

  • Web 2.0 Technologies and Services
  • Digital Natives and Patron Expectations
  • Digital Immigrants and 2.0 Staff Competencies

Topics covered in these thematic sessions will include:

  • Challenges and opportunities in the Web 2.0 environment
  • Impact of media and digital initiatives on library staff and services
  • Beyond the sandbox: shared best practices and lessons learned

The program is full of rich Web 2.0 content featuring terrific speakers. We also have a variety of opportunities for you to interact with our Sponsors and Exhibitors, while you meet and greet first-time attendees and old friends/colleagues. We've planned a 'green' conference so please check the website for a fun ice-breaker/contest at the Welcome Reception! You'll notice there are Service Meetings and Pre-Conference Workshops scheduled on Monday December 8th.

We hope you'll consider staying an extra day or longer to enjoy the Monterey/Big Sur region. Monterey is a tourist wonderland with activities for every interest level. The Hyatt is offering the reduced conference rate for a limited number of rooms through the weekend on a space-available, pre-reservation basis. Sign up sheets will be available at the Registration table for optional tours and activities Friday December 12th (prices and space availability vary).

Greening MLW 2008

In keeping with local and SLA-wide initiatives to Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse (RRR), you will not receive a MLW 2008 tote bag.  Instead, the Conference Planning Team is sponsoring a competition for best RRR of your favorite MLW tote bag. Please join the RRR fun and bring along a favorite MLW bag — we'll have prizes for many categories such as:  the oldest; the freshest; the most well-loved; the one that travelled the farthest distance to reach Monterey. Prizes and good environmental karma will be provided!

We are also working closely with the Hyatt Team, as they are committed to green and environmental-friendly initiatives and practices (read more about their programs under HOTEL).

Educational Objectives: Each pre-conference and conference session has learning objectives and educational outcomes. Attendees will be exposed to new technologies; gain hands-on experience; participate in interactive sessions and panel discussions; learn how to apply best practices; and will leave the conference with an action list to be implemented in their home library or for their professional growth and development.

The Staff of the Dudley Knox Library, Naval Postgraduate School, looks forward to welcoming you to scenic Monterey, California, for this exciting annual event.
