AULIMP Help

The Air University Library's Index to Military Periodicals (AULIMP) is a subject index to significant articles, news items, and editorials from English language military and aeronautical periodicals. The Index contains citations since 1988 and is updated continuously. This web site provides Searching and Browsing utilities to assist you in locating articles, news items, and editorials contained in the index.

Searching AULIMP

The search page itself is divided into two parts to give you two different ways to search for citations. The top part is the AULIMP Simple Search which allows you to perform simple searches across all fields of a citation.

The bottom part is the AULIMP Advanced Search which allows you to perform complex searches by providing a number of options from which to search for words. Either way you choose, you will be searching the same data.

Listed below are searching tips that you may find helpful during your search:

Finding One or More Terms

To find one or more terms, type them in the search box.

Example:
personnel finds results that contain the word "personnel"

cargo carrier
finds results that contain the word "cargo" OR the word "carrier"

Finding Phrases

To find a phrase, or terms adjacent to each other, enclose them in quotes in the search box.

Example:
"cargo carrier"
finds results that contain the phrase "cargo carrier"

NOTE: If you search for cargo carrier without the quotes, you get results that contain "cargo" OR "carrier."

Requiring Words

To require terms to be included in search results, type a plus sign (+) before them.

Example:
+cargo +carrier
finds results that contain both "cargo" AND "carrier"

Excluding Words

To exclude terms from search results, type a minus sign (-) before them.

Example:
"troop carrier" -ship
finds results that contain the phrase "troop carrier" but NOT the word "ship"

Singular and Plural

To search both singular and plural versions of a term, type either the singular term in the search box.

Example:
bullet
finds results that contain the term "bullet" or the term "bullets"

bullets
finds results that contain the term "bullet" or the term "bullets"

Case

Search terms in lower or UPPER case match words in any case.

Example:
TANKS
finds results that contain the words "TANKS," "tanks," "Tanks," "TANK," "tank," etc.

tanks
finds results that contain the words "TANKS," "tanks," "Tanks," "TANK," "tank," etc.

Tanks
finds results that contain the words "TANKS," "tanks," "Tanks," "TANK," "tank," etc.

tank
finds results that contain the words "TANKS," "tanks," "Tanks," "TANK," "tank," etc.

Browsing:

Browsing is another way to search the electronic AULIMP.

BROWSE by AUTHOR: View a complete list of authors. When you select a name, every citation in the AULIMP written by that author will appear on the "citation results" page.
BROWSE by PERIODICAL: When you select a periodical, you will get a brief description of the journal, an ISSN number and a link to the journal web site (when available). A list of years will also appear. After selecting one or more years, execute the search. A list of volume and numbers for that periodical for the year selected will appear on the screen. You can then select one or more volumes to retrieve a list of citations indexed for the particular issue.
BROWSE by SUBJECT: Scroll down the list of subject headings and select the term that interests you. A list of all the citations categorized under that subject heading will appear.

General Information:

Clicking on the title in your search results will give you the full citation which will include links:

To search for all articles written by the Author or 2nd Author/Editor.
To visit the periodical web site.
To search all articles in the same Topical Subject or Personal Subject areas
