POLICE CANINE (K-9) DIVISION

The Pentagon Police Department (PPD) Police Canine Division (K-9) is the explosive detection unit for the Department of Defense community in and around the Washington D.C. area. The K-9 Division is organized into several teams (canine and handler) that provide both proactive and reactive law enforcement functions in order to ensure a safe working environment at the Pentagon Reservation and its other associated properties. The K-9 Division conducts sweeps of delivery and construction vehicles at the Pentagon’s Remote Delivery Facility (RDF). The unit also conducts K-9 security sweeps involving Department of Defense high-risk personnel (HRP). Security sweeps are also conducted at numerous locations within the Pentagon Reservation and other DoD delegated buildings, unattended vehicles, suspicious packages, during bomb threats, and during official ceremonies. The PPD K-9 conducted K-9 demonstrations and performed at numerous displays throughout the National Capitol Region.

The Officers of the PPD K-9 Division are dedicated to duty and ready to respond to any situation at a moments notice. The dogs actually live with their assigned PPD Officers and are a part of every aspect of the Officer’s home life. This relationship is necessary to provide the most effective dog handler rapport. Since the handler and canines are always together, it provides for an efficient response time to incidents when canine support is needed.
