France Mission 1
(20 November through 13 December 1999)

This case involved a September 1944 ground combat loss along the Mosselle River in Corny, France. American soldiers were trapped by a German Panzer counterattack (in the vicinity Corny) in an area known as "Horseshoe Woods." The infantry attempted to cover retreat across the river under high water conditions. The remains were discovered by a French citizen association named "Thanks GI’s." No previous excavations had been performed at this location. The CILHI team successfully recovered remains and personal effects and closed the site. The team also investigated an additional 3 cases in France and Germany with the assistance of USAMAA-E.
