Abstract : A summary is presented of the chemical investigations of the regenerative oxygen absorbent Salcomine and the synthesis and properties of related chemical compounds. The cobalt compound derived from 2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzaldehyde and ethylenediamine was found to carry oxygen and oxygenate at a rate approximately 20 times that of the parent compound. This compound was obtained in the form of a hydrate which was converted into the active form by heating in a vacuum at 170 degrees. An extensive study of six methods for the preparation of this compound was made, and it was found that the most satisfactory method was that involving the precipitation of the cobalt derivative from a solution of the sodium salt of the Schiff's base in the dilute alcohol.
