Abstract : The goal of this MURI was to detect magnetic resonance from an individual proton using magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM). Pushing MRFM to single-proton sensitivity requires meeting three experimental challenges: (1) Fabricating nanomagnets which produce a large magnetic field gradient and yet have only a thin damage layer, (2) Understanding and mitigating the large non-contact friction (and frequency noise) typically experienced by an attonewton-sensitivity cantilever near a surface, and (3) Devising a suitable spin detection protocol.
