Abstract : The purpose of this research was to develop new ways of improving aircraft fuel efficiency, thus reducing overall operating costs in aviation for the Air Force. Specifically, this research sought to answer the feasibility and benefits from using cost index flying. The research questions were answered by first consulting commercial partners and learning how they computed their particular cost indexes. Next, primary data was gathered from the AMC Fuel Efficiency Office nad AMC Finance Management Office and was used to develop a cost index equation for the KC-10 and C-17. This cost index was then used in advanced flight planning software to compare overall operating costs.
