Abstract : The purpose of this research paper is to identify and analyze the various aspects of the national power of the German Federal Republic as it concerns the defense of Western Europe. This study, through an analysis of the historical background, geography and people, and the present role in the military, scientific and economic fields, presents an assessment of West Germany's defense potential. Finally, this research paper develops conclusions on what the United States should be doing to assure this support of the Free World's interest.
