Abstract : The Common Mapping System (CMS) defines data formats and standard distribution media for the storage, interchange, and retrieval of mapping, charting, geodesy, and imagery (MCG&I) data. A variety of DOD system are expected to adopt the CMS standard, including mission planning, intelligence, and avionics systems. The distribution media types supported by CMS will significantly the utility and cost of CMS for these system. This paper presents the results of an investigation into the attributes of candidate distribution media for CMS, describing cost and production time tradeoffs. We conclude that there would be value in adding compact-disk-read-only-memory (CD-ROM) to erasable optical disk (EOD) as supported distribution media to meet the needs of the Air Force Mission Support System (AFMSS). Additional media types may be necessary to support the requirements of other systems.
