Abstract : A description of the Global Positioning System (GPS) and current program status are provided. The importance of timing and position data are highlighted, using several historical examples. Potential uses for GPS by all the military services are explored. The author examines the role of the current GPS program office. The major drawback to the program, in the author's view, is that GPS requirements are not addressed from a joint Department of Defense perspective. A solution to this deficiency is suggested.
