Abstract : This study gives an overview of the current energy situation in the United States and reviews available approaches to alleviate our dependency on non-renewable fossil fuels. The thrust of the study centers on small-scale energy production from waste materials and how the Air Force can make effective use of such technologies. The study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of incorporating waste-to-energy incinerators into the power generation systems at remote sites because power generation at these sites poses a serious logistics problem, as was discovered recently at Ascension Island during the Falkland Islands War. Although the sites are geographically isolated and their entire energy supply must be transported in, they are pivotal to the success of our national security plans. Numerous references are cited which tend to support the economics of small-scale waste-to-energy incinerators to dispose of the site's solid waste while simultaneously replacing some of its petroleum requirements with renewable energy sources. A cost analysis of a waste-to-energy unit at Wright-Patterson AFB showed similar positive results. (Author)
