Abstract : This volume is the first in an eight-volume final report which documents a study of turbine emission degradation. It contains an introduction to the program, a description of the test schedule, equipment, procedures, and data analysis techniques, as well as a presentation of the principal results and conclusions of the program. A total of 519 repetitious emission tests were conducted over a period of 22 months on units of the following engine types: JT8D-9, JT8D-7, JT3D-7, JT3D-3B, JT9D-3A, RB211-22B, and CF700-2D. Emissions of C02, C0, HC, NO, NO(x) and smoke were monitored, in addition to various engine operating parameters, over an eight-mode test cycle ranging from cold idle to take-off and back to hot idle. Degradation, where it was found, is generally small and comparable in magnitude to other variations due to ambient conditions, unit-to-unit differences, measurement accuracy, and, perhaps, fuel characteristics.
