Abstract : The GPS (Global Positioning System) Range Applications Study assessed the potential cost benefits of GPS for test and evaluation applications. Generalized GPS-based and non-GPS-based test support equipment configurations for eight generically-derived DoD test ranges were defined, and a comparative evaluation of performance capabilities (against requriements) and of 20 year life cycle costs were performed. Based on these analyses, a prioritized ranking of recommended GPS test support applications was generated. A preliminary description of desirable characteristics of a family of GPS Instrumentation Equipment (IE) was developed, and a series of technical issues requiring resolution through field test was identified.
