Abstract : Dynamic fracture and crack-arrest responses of the well-discussed wedge-loaded rectangular, double cantilever beam (WL-RDCB) specimens machined from a 3.2 mm thick annealed polycarbonate sheet were studied by dynamic photoelasticity and dynamic finite element analysis. A small, but finite plastic yield zone surrounded the propagating crack which resulted in crack velocities, dynamic fracture toughness and crack arrest toughness lower than those observed previously in 6.4 mm thick polycarbonate fracture specimens.
