Abstract : A non-iterative variational technique for solving the acoustic field equations is applied to three different boundary conditions, namely, a free surface, an edge and a surface with periodic discontinuities. A perturbation approach to surface wave scattering by periodic discontinuities is also developed and used to obtain both the elastic and the piezoelectric scatter matrix of a single electrode in a periodic array directly from the material parameters of the substrate and the electrodes. This scatter matrix accurately predicts the response of surface wave filters, transducers and reflectors. (Author)
