Abstract : This paper describes the Soviet military's extensive network for the training of prospective regular officers of the Soviet Armed Forces. After analyzing recruitment procedures, indicators of program effectiveness, problems of cadet discipline, as well as methods and perplexities of ideological inculcation, the author concludes that, barring the highly publicized 'few exceptions' (nekotorye iskliucheniia), the contemporary graduates of these schools are at least as well educated or exposed to as good an education in the practical aspects of their chosen profession, as are their American counterparts.
