Abstract : Background: Primary care physicians are faced with a variety of diagnoses daily, and it is well-known that musculoskeletal (MSK) complaints are among the most common. Multiple studies have shown that amongst primary care pediatricians, there are deficiencies in orthopedic and MSK knowledge as well as discomfort with orthopedic procedures. Within our residency program, there were self-reported deficiencies in several orthopedic procedures including splinting and casting. Aim Statement: We planned to increase the MSK knowledge of our pediatric residents through implementation of an integrated orthopedic curriculum with a formalized evaluation process. Methods: We developed a curriculum to include 3 didactic sessions between a senior orthopedic resident and a junior pediatric resident (PL- 2) over a 4 week period. Each session consisted of a lecture based review of basic MSK knowledge followed by clinical patient encounters in the Pediatric Acute Fracture Clinic. During the patient encounters the pediatric resident was expected to evaluate the patient, generate an assessment of the patient' s injury, develop a treatment plan and then present the information to the orthopedic resident. Pre-participation and post-participation written assessments and surveys were obtained.
