Abstract : The United States Army will likely be called upon to fight another irregular war much sooner than many leaders care to admit. Limited resources and personnel mean the Army must ensure it can fight conventional and irregular adversaries equally well from the outset of any operation. This paper argues that general-purpose Army forces have an important role in future irregular warfare, regardless of any contrary political or institutional desires. It discusses strategic inconsistencies affecting the Army's role in future irregular warfare and ability to prepare for these conflicts.
