Abstract : Photonic crystals can produce strong light trapping and enhancement of the field using the tailoring of dispersion and the photonic band gap. The band gap frequency can be matched to tailor the emission from active medium such as quantum dots and quantum wells. In addition, the selective matching of the band gap can be done to one or two of electronic levels in a multi-level system to influence the emission.
