Abstract : A detailed mathematical derivation and verification of the three Courant-Wallace expressions, which have the three second moments of the neutron probability distribution in a pile as the three unknowns, are given. The solution of these equations for a steady pile with one equivalent delayed neutron group for the variance/mean ratio is verified. Minor corrections to the original Courant-Wallace text are noted.
