Abstract : Spectroscopic properties of a number of potential laser materials have been measured, including fluorescence and excitation spectra and fluorescence decay rates. Transfer of energy to neodymium from chromium and gadolinium in GdAlO3 and from chromium in Y3Al5G12 (YA1G) is described. Improvements in the Czochralski growth of YA1G has improved crystal yield and perfection. Theoretical investigation determined the phonon-lattice interaction Hamiltonian which couples two impurity ions, determining the phonon-assisted energy transfer between the ions. (Author)
